The 60-Second Tire Test That Could Save You From a Blowout

You’re already late for work when you notice your tire-pressure warning light. The tire still looks round, so you decide to deal with it later. That small decision can become a serious problem if the tire is underinflated, badly worn, or hiding damage in the sidewall.

The good news is that you can perform a quick tire safety check in about 60 seconds. You only need a U.S. penny, a tire-pressure gauge, and a moment to look closely at each tire.

This simple inspection is not a substitute for professional service, but it can help you spot warning signs before a tire fails on the highway. Here’s what to check.

Start With the Penny Tread Test

Tread gives your tires the grip they need to stop, turn, and channel water away from the contact patch. As tread wears down, your vehicle can lose traction: especially on wet Washington roads.

  1. Find a U.S. penny.
  2. Turn it so Abraham Lincoln’s head is upside down.
  3. Place the penny into one of the tire’s main tread grooves.

Both edges worn down

When both shoulders are more worn than the center, underinflation may be the cause. An underinflated tire flexes more as it rolls, which creates heat and puts extra stress on the sidewalls. That combination can increase the risk of tire failure.

Inflate the tire to the cold pressure listed on the driver’s door-jamb label or in your owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum PSI printed on the tire sidewall as your everyday target. That number is a limit for the tire, not the vehicle’s recommended operating pressure.

One edge worn down

If the inside or outside edge is wearing faster than the rest, your vehicle may have an alignment or suspension issue. Continuing to drive on it can destroy the tire’s usable tread while making your vehicle pull or handle unpredictably.

Cupping or scalloped wear

Cupping looks like a series of dips or high-and-low patches around the tread. It can be connected to worn shocks or struts, wheel imbalance, or other suspension problems. It may also cause a humming or thumping sound that changes with speed.

Correcting the underlying problem matters. Replacing the tire alone may not prevent the new one from wearing the same way.

Inspect the Sidewalls for Damage

The tread is only one part of a tire. Spend a few seconds looking at both sidewalls, including the side facing the vehicle. You may need to turn the steering wheel to see the front tires more clearly.

Do not ignore:

  • Bulges or bubbles
  • Deep cracks
  • Cuts or punctures
  • Exposed fabric or steel cords
  • Damage near the shoulder of the tire

A bulge usually means the tire’s internal structure has been damaged, often after hitting a pothole or curb. It can fail with little warning. A tire with a serious bulge should be removed from service immediately; avoid driving at highway speeds on it.

Small surface lines caused by age may not always mean immediate failure, but deep or spreading cracks are a serious warning sign. If you can see cords, the tire is no longer safe to use.
